Do you know what the word oenophile means? If you
said an appreciator of wines, you are right. You may even be an
oenophile yourself. How is wine made? When yeast and grape juice
or any other sweet liquid are combined, fermentation occurs and
the magical drink that is wine is created.
Back in the ancient world someone discovered that
if he put yeast into grape juice he turned it into an entirely new
drink. What he may or may not have understood is that yeast causes
the grape juice to ferment which changes all the sugar in the juice
into alcohol. He shared his drink with others who agreed that he
had come up with something pretty good. That is when ancient peoples
began intentionally making juice into wine.
In that time period wine storage solutions were not
so much of a problem. Crocks and ewers were the choices that you
had and there was hardly a way of controlling temperature or humidity.
This made it uncertain that when you opened the crock if you would
find vinegar or wine. The first wine cellars came to be after caves
and cellars were found to be good conditions for wine to reach it's
peak.
Just as they learned that wine needs different conditions
to develop and quite another set for aging and storage, modern wine
lovers have learned that wine storage solutions need to meet different
situations. For modest wines in a home that is kept at a reasonably
moderate temperature and humidity, open wine racks provide adequate
wine storage for many tastes.
Wine storage coolers work to protect wine and keep
it at its best possible quality. If you are a serious wine lover
you may want to purchase one in order to maintain more precise conditions
for your wine. The sizes of wine storage coolers vary and can be
as large as a room sized refrigerator chamber, or small enough to
hold only one bottle. Choosing the best wine storage solutions for
your household will depend on what is being stored, the budget,
and preferred taste.
It is difficult to get wine to stay at it's peak
and even more difficult to get it to reach it's peak. Temperature
range for wine is not very broad, it needs to be no lower than 40
degrees and no higher than 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Little variation
is allowed and no more than five degrees. The less temperature variation
occurs the better and it should happen less than one time per year.
Humidity should be kept at more than fifty percent and the cooler
should be out of the sun and light free, which is something that
can harm wines.
One important factor to consider in a wine storage
unit is the angle the bottles will be housed at. Preferably, the
bottles should be stored on horizontally on their sides, but can
be stored at up to a 45 degree angle. Wine racks are the best storage
method, but coolers are also sometimes used to stack bottles. A
storage rack should be able to accommodate both standard wine bottles
and unique sizes and shapes.
