These wines are from the San Juan region (north of Mendoza), where the wines are generally softly and not as tannic as those from Mendoza. Both are exceptional wines. The Malbec is supple, full bodied, lightly oaky, and well balanced, tasting of ripe grapes, blackberry, plum, and toast. 1,100 cases. The Syrah is also supple and very ripely flavored (boysenberry jam), with full body, light oakiness, and excellent length. 1,100 cases. Drink through 2007.

* 2003 MALBEC, MENDOZA, $9-$11
* 2003 MERLOT, MENDOZA, $9-$11
These are hard to beat at the price. The Malbec is generously flavored and softly textured, in a full bodied, moderately intense style, tasting of berries, with spicy, beefy overtones. It is well balanced and has a long finish. The Merlot is a ripe, supple, moderately complex wine, with some richness, and good balance. It has cherry-like fruit character, light oakiness, and a long finish. 3,000 cases. Drink through 2007.
