The wines are newly imported to this country, and they are
all excellent values. In style, the wines are richly flavored
and well balanced.. Among these, the Cabernet is a supple,
fruity wine, that is well balanced and long on the palate.
It has medium depth, light oakiness, and a medium long finish.
It tastes of plum, cherry, fig, aniseed, and oak. 1,500 cases.
The Sangiovese is fruity and less tannic than California
versions. It is full bodied, supple, lightly oaked, and crisp;
a ripe style of Sangiovese, with spicy oak and plum-like
flavors. 1,500 cases. The Malbec is rich, full bodied, and
long; a wonderful wine at the price. It taste of plum, berry
jam, toasted oak, and aniseed. Long finish. 1,500 cases.
The Syrah is supple, fruity, full bodied wine, with some
richness, light oakiness, and medium length. It tastes of
plum, blackberry, tea, toast, and pepper. 1,500 cases. Drink
through 2007.
MELIPAL, 2003 MALBEC
MENDOZA
$15-$17
This is a remarkable value. It is intensely flavored (smoky
oak, aniseed, blackberry), full bodied, and long on the palate,
with a lightly oaky finish. From 80 year old vines. 1,552
cases. Drink through 2008.
XUMEK – Valle de Zonda, San Juan
* 2003 MALBEC, $12-$14
* 2003 SYRAH, $12 -$14
These wines are from the San Juan region (north of Mendoza),
where the wines are generally softly and not as tannic as
those from Mendoza. Both are exceptional wines. The Malbec
is supple, full bodied, lightly oaky, and well balanced,
tasting of ripe grapes, blackberry, plum, and toast. 1,100
cases. The Syrah is also supple and very ripely flavored
(boysenberry jam), with full body, light oakiness, and excellent
length. 1,100 cases. Drink through 2007.
ZOLO
* 2003 MALBEC, MENDOZA, $9-$11
* 2003 MERLOT, MENDOZA, $9-$11
These are hard to beat at the price. The Malbec is generously
flavored and softly textured, in a full bodied, moderately
intense style, tasting of berries, with spicy, beefy overtones.
It is well balanced and has a long finish. The Merlot is
a ripe, supple, moderately complex wine, with some richness,
and good balance. It has cherry-like fruit character, light
oakiness, and a long finish. 3,000 cases. Drink through 2007.
